pelican envy

Ahhh. Glorious pelicans, goodbye until another day. Tomorrow I fly home while you continue to patrol your magnificent beach. I shall think of you while I’m home. I’ve enjoyed watching you fly your sky parade in front of my seventh floor deck, and find you the most regal of birds! I saw you wink at me yesterday, and although I know you wanted my most favorite Cheez-Its, I think there was a little more to your flirtation. I almost wish I had shared them with you. Perhaps then you would have sat on my deck and we could have shared our secrets. I feel I understand you better now. In so many ways I envy your freedom to stay, to just throw yourself into the wind and enjoy the beach in ways I will never know. I will miss you as I visit the beaches along Washington State. I will dream of you, and your warm beach. Until next time. . .I’ll meet you on the seventh floor deck. . .

  1. I was eating lunch with some friends one day on Galveston island in Texas. We were on the wharf having shrimp po-boys and there was a pelican sitting up on one of the pilings along the pier. A seagull started pestering him and the pelican grabbed him and stuffed the gull in his big mouth. That’s when the fight started… I never saw a panicked seagull before. There was squawking and feathers flying and the gull finally escaped with his life. Pelican just turned his head away and ignored him after that. The seagull gave Pelican a wide berth after that!! We laughed until our stomachs hurt…. I wish I had a camera…
