For five days, we could hear an unearthly, unexplained thumping coming from the second story floor. This kept on, day and night. I spent a lot of time on the floor listening with a stethoscope. Thump, thump … thump … thump … thump, thump. On and on, hour after hour for five days. The space is only six inches deep. Thump! Nothing is between the floor boards and ceiling below. Thump, thump. Then, while I was gone on Friday, it stopped. Blissful silence! Whatever it was is no longer thumping. Glorious, beautiful, peaceful. Silence!
